Easy guide to meditation - 5 tips to get started

Meditation is a way to reach for a feeling of peace and grounding. To slow down the central nervous system (aka those 1 million thoughts in your head) and just be with you, while feeling connected to all things. It’s a cool feeling.

The fastest way I have found to get better at meditation and all those good feelings that come with it is to focus on the breath. Literally count the inhale for 4 counts and the same for the exhale. Feel your lungs expand, feel the muscles around your ribs. Start feeling that lightless in your mind that is thought-free.

HINT: by focusing on the breath it distracts the mind which can only focus on one thing at once. Allowing you to get deeper and deeper into meditation.

There are many different types of meditation and I encourage you to find what works best for you.

5 Tips when you are getting started:

Step 1 Start with 5-10 minutes and build up to 15 - 20 minutes

Step 2 It’s an art, don’t give up if you are not “ feeling it” at the beginning. Love yourself enough to keep trying it consistently

Step 3 Obvious one - make sure you are in a quiet, uninterrupted space. Lay down or sit up, whatever works best for you. Personally, I prefer sitting up, usually on my bed with my back supported.

Step 4 When thoughts or worries come to you that is OK, just bring it back to centre. You may have to do this numerous times throughout your meditations. Eventually you will do this less

Step 5 If you are giving Guided meditation a go make sure like the persons voice and speaking style (I have learnt that I am very fussy and get easily annoyed if I don’t like their tone.. Hey! No one’s perfect).

I hope you find this useful and start enjoying meditation and breath work!
